GRESHAM, Ore. — Gresham City Councilor Eddy Morales announced Wednesday that he will run for U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer's seat. Blumenauer had announced Monday that he won't seek reelection in 2024 after nearly three decades of representing Oregon's 3rd Congressional District.
“I’m thrilled to share the news — today I filed to run for Congress in Oregon’s incredible 3rd District, to build on Congressman Earl Blumenauer’s legacy and bring fresh progressive energy and vision to this community that I love,” Morales wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Morales has been on the Gresham City Council since 2019 and is the treasurer for the Democratic Party of Oregon. He is also the owner of a public relations firm, Morales Public Relations, and is active in several organizations, including East County Rising, which he founded; the Community Catalyst Action Fund; and the Oregon Coalition for Common Sense. He had previously run for Gresham mayor in 2020 and lost by a narrow margin to Travis Stovall.
Morales is the second Democrat to announce their candidacy. His announcement follows Multnomah County Commissioner Susheela Jayapal's on Wednesday. She resigned from the Board of County Commissioners with plans to run for the same congressional seat.
Another Democrat, Oregon state Rep. Travis E. Nelson, has also said that he is considering running for Blumenauer's seat.
