I-205 slowdowns and closure happening Thursday morning for blasting caps detonation

A controlled detonation in West Linn near Highway 43 requires a 15-minute closure of the freeway, with I-205 rolling slowdowns from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Anyone traveling on Interstate 205 in West Linn Thursday morning should expect heavy delays as contractors perform a controlled detonation west of Highway 43, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).

ODOT said there will be a 15-minute closure of I-205 in both directions, between 10th Street in West Linn and 99E in Oregon City, to allow the work to be performed. 

Around that, there will be slowdowns for about a two-hour window between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. There will be a number of road closures within the city of West Linn as well to allow contractors to detonate what appears to be two blasting caps discovered underground. They were likely used during the original construction of the Abernethy Bridge, ODOT said in a press release. There is no danger to the public.

The Abernethy Bridge carries about 103,000 vehicles per day, according to 2018 ODOT traffic counts, along I-205 over the Willamette River between the communities of West Linn and Oregon City.
